Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom release jumps forward five days

Warner Bros. pushes the release of James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa ahead by five days.

Warner Bros. announced today that the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has jumped forward… but only slightly. The Aquaman sequel was slated to hit theaters on December 25th, but it will now premiere five days earlier on December 20th.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will switch places with Blitz Bazawule’s musical coming-of-age drama The Color Purple, which was originally set for release on December 20th but will now debut on Christmas Day. We still haven’t seen or heard all that much about the Aquaman sequel, but Jason Momoa has teased that the movie is “really a journey with the brothers. Patrick Wilson is phenomenal and there’s just a lot of themes that are going on in it. What I wanted to do was not have some alien force that’s trying to attack us. It’s not gonna be something that’s from an outer world. It’s all about what we’re doing to our planet, and we’re expediting what’s gonna happen when you melt the caps. It’s our future. You’re seeing it happen right now.

As the DC Universe is heading in a new direction under the watchful eye of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it’s still not entirely clear which characters from the old universe will make the transition. Jason Momoa recently said that he’s confident that Aquaman will be a part of their plans. “Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend,” Jason Momoa said. “I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!” Momoa also touched upon Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which he hopes people are excited to see. “It’s fun,” Momoa said. “I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.

In addition to Jason Momoa as Aquaman, the upcoming Aquaman sequel also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Amber Heard as Mera. The sequel will find Aquaman forging an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally in a bid to save Atlantis and the rest of the planet. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will now hit theaters on December 20th.
